Artificial intelligence can significantly simplify mobile application modification for hackers. A Positive Technologies study showed that the probability of successfully embedding foreign code without breaking the program exceeds 60%.
Experts tested 90 Android applications, adding safe neutral code to them. Closed commercial models succeeded in 84% of cases, open ones in 61%. One successful attempt took from 5 minutes 38 seconds to 9 minutes 9 seconds.
Such intervention can cost from just 0.88 to 40.89 rubles. For a few thousand, attackers can potentially iterate through hundreds of programs and embed data interception, remote control, or change application behavior.
Builds from messengers and third-party sites are especially dangerous. The risk is higher when the desired program is not available in the official store and the user himself is looking for an “alternative” version. Developers are advised to strengthen protection against code modification, analysis, and the creation of clones.
