The crew of the research vessel (NIS) "Ordovik" (formerly "Akademik Nemchinov") has begun geological exploration work in Anadyr Bay of the Bering Sea. Specialists are searching for oil and gas fields on behalf of Rosgeologia.
The motor ship is part of the fleet of the company "Sevmorneftegeofizika" (a subsidiary of Rosgeologia). In June, it arrived in Chukotka from Murmansk. The vessel is equipped with special equipment for hydrocarbon exploration.
It tows an acoustic signal emitter and a receiving system – a seismic streamer 9 kilometers long. The seismic streamer is towed at a speed of 4-5 knots.
Rosrybolovstvo warned mariners about the work. It is forbidden to approach the "Ordovik" closer than 14 km. Fishing vessels were also ordered to remove drifting fishing gear to clear the route for the NIS.
Characteristics of NIS "Ordovik":
- Length — 84.4 m
- Width — 14.8 m
- Draft — 5.2 m
- Speed — 12 knots
- Autonomy — 50 days
- Deadweight — 1469 t
- Gross tonnage — 3 224 t
The vessel was built in 1988 in Poland but was re-equipped for research purposes in Russia. The NIS received an acoustic emitter and a seismic streamer (a multi-core cable with built-in sensors) to form 3D seismic models of the seabed.
