MTS company has received a patent for the EnergyTool energy consumption analysis system. The development, based on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, allows for prompt detection of anomalies in electricity consumption, automatically identifying and localizing mining farms and other cases of theft.
The system has been operating since 2021 — a statistical model analyzes data from smart meters and identifies characteristic signs of theft. Suspicious objects are displayed on an interactive map, allowing operational teams to plan site visits and detect incidents three times more effectively on average.
According to Rospatent, EnergyTool is used by more than 50 large companies in the energy and industrial sectors. Among them is Bashkirenergo, where the system helped identify hundreds of faulty metering devices. In 2025, with the help of the solution, 15% more mining farms were recorded in Russia than in 2024. The Irkutsk region, Bashkortostan, Moscow, Samara region, and Krasnodar Krai became leaders in their number.
Since the beginning of 2024, the system has allowed the detection of several hundred illegal mining farms. Underground cryptocurrency mining poses a serious problem for energy systems: hundreds of devices from one enterprise can consume the annual electricity volume of an entire urban district in just one month, leading to grid overload and emergency outages for ordinary consumers.
