Large asteroids approaching Earth have almost stopped being found today. According to scientists, this may mean that most such objects have already been discovered and no serious threat from them should be expected in the next 100 years. This was stated by Sergey Yazev, leading researcher at the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and professor at Irkutsk State University.
According to him, the discovery of asteroids larger than one kilometer among objects approaching Earth has practically ceased. This means that the vast majority of such bodies are already known to science and do not pose a danger to the planet in the next hundred years.
At the same time, astronomers continue to record new near-Earth asteroids daily — about a dozen a day. These are usually small objects ranging in size from a few meters to tens of meters.
Most often, they are discovered shortly before approaching Earth. Some of them enter the planet's atmosphere and burn up completely, posing no serious threat.
