Arctic multi-purpose warship "Ivan Papanin" put to sea: icebreaker, patrol ship, and tug in one hull

The newest ice-class patrol ship "Ivan Papanin" has begun combat training in the Barents Sea. According to the press service of the Northern Fleet, the crew practiced interaction with Ka-27 deck helicopters in difficult weather conditions. The helicopter pilots performed take-offs and landings on the move, as well as flights around the ship to test radio-technical armament, air defense systems, and communication systems.

Project 23550, to which "Ivan Papanin" belongs, is the first ship in Russia that combines the functions of a patrol vessel, an icebreaker, and a tug. The Arctic category Arc7 allows it to independently force ice up to 1.7 meters thick. The ship is capable of escorting and towing detained vessels, accompanying convoys, and participating in rescue operations. It joined the Northern Fleet in September 2025.

Thus, the Navy receives a universal platform for the Arctic zone, where one pennant covers three tasks that previously required separate units. This reduces the load on logistics and allows for more effective control of the Northern Sea Route.
