Russians spent 366 billion rubles in a month: mass purchase of new cars

Russian cars were chosen in 24.4% of cases

In May 2026, Russians spent 366.4 billion rubles on new passenger cars. This is less than in April (395.9 billion rubles), but significantly more than a year ago, when the figure was 291.5 billion rubles. Such data are provided in a study by Gazprombank Autoleasing and Autostat.

From January to May 2026, Russians spent 1.69 trillion rubles on new passenger cars. This is 22.4% more than in the same period last year.

In May, premium and luxury cars accounted for less than a quarter of the market in monetary terms. 10.1 thousand such cars were sold for 85.6 billion rubles. The share of premium cars decreased from 25.5% in April to 23.4% in May.

The mass segment, on the contrary, strengthened its position. Its share in the monetary structure grew from 74.5% to 76.6%. In May, 99.8 thousand cars were sold in this segment for 280.8 billion rubles.

Russians spent the most money on Chinese cars — they accounted for 46.3% of the market's financial capacity in May. This is followed by domestic brands with a share of 24.4%, European — 14%, Japanese — 9.1%, Korean — 1.5%, and American — 1%.

In terms of units, Chinese brands also took first place: 46.4 thousand such cars were sold in May. Domestic brands were almost not far behind — 45.1 thousand cars.

Crossovers and SUVs again occupied the main part of the market. In May, Russians bought 79.9 thousand new SUVs for 296.6 billion rubles. This segment accounted for 72.7% of sales in units and 80.9% of the market in monetary terms.

According to Autostat's estimates, a total of almost 110 thousand new passenger cars were sold in May. This is 20.5% more than a year ago, but 6.5% less than in April. At the same time, the market has been above the 100 thousand car mark for the third consecutive month.
