As of 2026, the Russian Armed Forces have no less than 3460 main battle tanks. This estimate from foreign sources was cited by the publication "Tekhnosfera Rossiya".
This number includes 620 T-90M "Proryv" units and 350 gas-turbine T-80BVMs — the most modern combat vehicles.
However, the T-14 "Armata" is absent from foreign lists; their number is not even hypothetically known.
Researchers believe that there are approximately 2.1 thousand more tanks in storage bases.
"Pervy Tekhnichesky" in a major article compared the capabilities of the T-90M with the T-14. Right now, the "Proryv" looks like a more practical platform, but the "Armata" stands out for its technological sophistication and will define the appearance of "tomorrow's" tanks.
The T-80BVM also continues to evolve, despite its Soviet platform. For example, the tank received rubberized tracks and now approaches positions much more quietly.
