The heater will save the engine in the heat: an expert explained how to dissipate heat from the engine in a deadlocked traffic jam

Air conditioner - turn off, heater - to maximum, windows - open

Driving in a city traffic jam during abnormal heat is the most difficult mode for an engine. As Vyacheslav Ashurkov, an expert from the Federation of Russian Car Owners, told TASS, the load in a stop-and-go rhythm, when the car constantly starts and stops, is comparable to starting the engine after a frosty night.

If there is a risk of overheating, the first thing to do is to turn off the air conditioner, which creates a critical load. Then the driver should turn on the car's heater to maximum power and high fan speed, making sure to open the windows. The physics of the method is simple: the heater takes some of the heat from the cooling system and dissipates it into the cabin, acting as an additional radiator and leveling the engine temperature.

Before driving in the heat, the expert advises checking the coolant level in the expansion tank. If the temperature gauge continues to rise and the heater does not help, this is a signal to immediately stop and turn off the engine. Overheating is fraught with extremely expensive repairs, up to and including a complete engine overhaul.
