Will Salaries Be Transferred to Digital Rubles? The Central Bank Explained How It Will Work

The employee and the company will decide whether to use the new payment method after September 1

Employers will not be obliged to transfer employee salaries to digital rubles after September 1, 2026. The new payment method will appear as an additional option, not as a replacement for traditional card transfers.

From this date, the largest banks and certain categories of trading companies must prepare to work with the digital ruble. Citizens and organizations will be able to open accounts, transfer money, and pay for purchases in the new form of the national currency.

Salaries in digital rubles can only be received under two conditions: the company is technically ready for such payments, and the employee himself wants it. The choice will remain with the parties to the employment relationship.

That is, the usual procedure will not change: the employee will be able to continue receiving money on a bank card. The digital ruble will become another payment method, not a mandatory scenario for businesses and employees.
