Russian websites block registration via Gmail after fines are introduced

"Avito" warns users about the ban on logging in through foreign services

Major Russian online platforms are abandoning authorization through foreign email services after the State Duma approved fines on June 9 for using authorization programs that do not operate on Russian territory. For example, when trying to register on Avito via Gmail, users are denied: they are offered to log in using another method or restore access by phone.

Now, registration on Russian websites is only allowed through a Russian phone number, the Gosuslugi portal, a unified biometric system, or information systems owned by a Russian citizen or a Russian legal entity. Users already registered through foreign email can continue to use their accounts – the law has no retroactive effect.

Website owners were given time to bring their authorization systems into compliance with the requirements.

Avito commented on the situation: according to company representatives, it has been impossible to authorize via Google since 2023 in accordance with the Law "On Communications", but it is possible to log in via any linked email, and technically nothing has changed for users.
