"GosVPN" for the select few: Roskomnadzor seeks access to foreign services for developers

Companies met the proposal without much enthusiasm

Roskomnadzor discussed with representatives of major Russian IT companies the idea of creating a unified state VPN for developers. Such a tool is proposed as a way to access foreign repositories and services that have become unstable or unavailable for Russian users.

The meeting, attended by representatives of Yandex, VK, 1C, InfoWatch, Positive Technologies, and other companies, discussed problems with access to GitHub, Figma, PyPI, Debian repositories, Rust, and other important development tools. One of the proposed options is a unified "GosVPN" with a complex structure, which developers who need such access for their work will be able to use.

In addition, Roskomnadzor proposed that companies maintain operational interaction with the agency. In case of problems with access to foreign resources, individual issues can be resolved manually. The idea of creating a domestic repository that could reduce dependence on external infrastructure was also discussed.

According to market participants, the idea of "GosVPN" did not generate much enthusiasm among developers. One of the main risks is the emergence of a single point of access: if Russian users massively access foreign services through one channel, it will be easier for foreign platforms to restrict such traffic. In addition, companies have questions about who will get access to such a tool and under what conditions.

For now, it's only a discussion. The details of the possible creation and implementation of "GosVPN" are planned to be worked out at subsequent meetings. The topic has become particularly relevant against the backdrop of problems of Russian IT companies with access to foreign development tools and restrictions on VPN traffic.
