Russia still imports some complex biopharmaceuticals: "Pharmasyntez-Nord" to invest 30 billion rubles in a new biotech cluster

Monoclonal antibodies and innovative drugs, currently barely produced in the country, will be manufactured in St. Petersburg

"Pharmasyntez-Nord" announced the launch of one of the largest biopharmaceutical projects in recent years. The company will create the third phase of a high-tech biotechnology complex at its site in St. Petersburg, investing at least 30 billion rubles.

The agreement for the project's implementation was signed on the sidelines of the SPIEF 2026. The new stage of enterprise development includes the creation of a research center, a platform for the development of monoclonal antibodies, and modern full-cycle production facilities.

The main goal of the project is to master the production of biotechnological drugs, which are currently largely represented on the Russian market by imported products. This refers to complex new-generation drugs used for the treatment of oncological, autoimmune, and a number of other severe diseases.

Unlike traditional chemical drugs, biotechnological drugs are created based on living cells and require much more complex production processes. This is why the construction of such enterprises is considered one of the most capital-intensive areas of modern pharmaceutics.

The company plans to create at least 1000 new jobs. The investment stage of the project is planned until 2029, the first drugs are expected to enter the market in 2030, and the enterprise expects to reach its design capacity between 2034 and 2036.

According to Mikhail Kvasnikov, the company's CEO, the complex will be a full-cycle production – from scientific research to industrial drug manufacturing. Vikram Punia, President of the "Pharmasyntez" group of companies, noted that the project is aimed at developing domestic biopharmaceutics and expanding the industry's export potential.
