Russia has launched the serial production of the domestic intraocular lens "Yashen", which completely replaces the eye's lens in case of cataracts. According to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Health, production has been deployed at the S. N. Fyodorov Academic NMIC MNTK "Eye Microsurgery". The development allows the patient to give up glasses after surgery and restores the ability to focus at different distances.
Unlike standard monofocal models, "Yashen" is produced in several modifications. The toric version corrects astigmatism – distortions caused by an irregular corneal shape – and provides high visual acuity. For patients with a combination of cataracts and age-related farsightedness, the lens gives the eye the ability to see both near and far.
The launch of serial production of the lens will increase the availability of high-tech ophthalmic surgical care for the population and strengthen the country's technological sovereignty in ophthalmology. In fact, Russian surgeons have received a tool comparable to expensive imported multifocal lenses, and patients have a chance to regain their vision without dependence on foreign supplies.
