The End of Lada in Germany: After 50 Years, Lower Saxony Importer Files for Bankruptcy

The peak of 50,000 cars in the early 90s was replaced by three dozen over two years

The German importer of Lada – Lada Deutschland GmbH from Buxtehude (Lower Saxony, near Hamburg) – has declared insolvency, t-online reports. The company, which has been operating in the German market for over 50 years, has been virtually stagnant for several months: only about ten employees remained, and a new investor could not be found.

A chain of events led to the collapse. Already at the end of 2019, AvtoVAZ stopped official exports to Europe due to stricter environmental standards. The importer tried to circumvent the ban through gray imports – bringing in the Niva under the names Lada 4x4 and Lada Taiga. With the start of hostilities in Ukraine and the imposition of sanctions, deliveries of new cars and spare parts ceased. As a lifeline, the company took on Chinese JAC and Dayun, but the project failed. The result: no more than three dozen cars sold in 2024–2025.

Yet, once upon a time, Germany was Lada's main Western market. In the 1970s, the West German importer sold up to 12,000 cars of models 1200 and 1500 per year. But the real peak came in 1991 – immediately after the reunification of Germany, Lada Deutschland sold a sensational 50,000 new cars. The main driver always remained the Niva – an SUV that at times accounted for over 90% of the brand's sales in the German market and was considered iconic among hunters and foresters.

The departure of Lada Deutschland is not just the closure of a dealer, but the collapse of a channel that first brought Kia to Germany in the early 1990s. For AvtoVAZ, the importer's bankruptcy means the final loss of the European market, which relied on residual demand and spare parts. Neither the Niva nor the attempt to switch to the Chinese model range worked.
