Hungary to review terms of Paks-2 NPP project

Budapest considers the station's cost to be inflated

The new Hungarian government intends to review the terms of the Paks-2 project and assess its cost. The initiative was announced by István Kapitány, candidate for Minister of Economy and Energy.

According to Kapitány, the country's authorities plan to reduce energy costs and electricity production.

One of the first measures to achieve these goals will be a review of the Paks-2 NPP construction project.

Kapitány noted that the new leadership of the country has not yet familiarized itself with the details of the contracts, as they are classified. The review of the documents will begin shortly.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar also announced his intention to review the economic efficiency of the project. Budapest believes that its cost may be inflated.

Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev stated that the company is ready to confirm the project's efficiency and the justification of its cost.

The Paks-2 project is being implemented based on Russian-Hungarian agreements signed in 2014. Its cost was estimated at 12.5 billion euros, with the main part of the financing expected to come from a Russian loan.
