Russian Nuclear Icebreakers Receive Fully Domestic Control System

The "Okean 22220" complex monitors a thousand parameters

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping has approved an import-substituted remote control and monitoring system for Project 22220 nuclear icebreakers. The digital complex controls the operation of key power systems and manages the icebreaker's electric propulsion.

The "Okean 22220" system monitors thousands of parameters – from the temperature of the propulsion electric motor windings to the load on turbogenerators and humidity inside the equipment.

The complex automatically assembles the electric propulsion scheme, controls equipment startup, and helps distribute the load among the vessel's power systems.

Project 22220 icebreakers use an electrical scheme where turbogenerators simultaneously provide propulsion for the vessel and power for all onboard systems. Each of the three propulsion electric motors develops a power of up to 20 MW.

Recall that Project 22220 includes the nuclear icebreakers "Arktika", "Sibir", "Ural", "Yakutia", and "Chukotka".
