Bangladesh expects to commission the second power unit of the Rooppur NPP in 2027. This was announced by the country's Minister of Science and Technology, Fakir Mahbub Anam, during the physical launch ceremony of the station's first unit.
According to the minister, Dhaka highly values cooperation with Russia in the field of peaceful atom and considers the project important for the country's future. He noted that the construction of Bangladesh's first nuclear power plant has become a symbol of technological development and strengthening of national sovereignty.
Anam expressed confidence that the launch of the NPP will allow the republic to enhance energy security, ensure stable electricity supply, and support economic growth. The minister also announced his intention to meet with Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev again in a year.
I would like to see you again in 2027 at the launch ceremony of the second unit. I expect that we will succeed.
The Rooppur NPP is being built according to a Russian design 160 kilometers from Dhaka. The station includes two power units with VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2400 MW. The general contract for construction was signed in December 2015.
On April 28, nuclear fuel was loaded into the reactor of the first power unit at the station site. This stage is considered one of the key steps in preparing the facility for launch. The next step will be the generation of the first electricity and the connection of the unit to the country's power system.
