Scientists at Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed a multilayer coating capable of significantly extending the service life of equipment. Compared to conventional solutions, it proved to be 40% harder and 3–5 times more resistant to corrosion.
The secret lies in the titanium "sandwich" structure. First, pure titanium is applied for adhesion, then layers of titanium nitride (against rust) and titanium carbonitride (for strength). On top is an additional hardening layer that absorbs friction and pressure.
To achieve uniformity, the scientists modified the application technology – using two sputtering sources instead of one. This allowed for more precise control over the coating structure and avoided defects.
In the laboratory, the material was tested under conditions similar to oil wells. As a result, wear resistance increased by 78% compared to foreign counterparts, and the ability to withstand loads increased by 1.5 times.
Such a coating can be used in the oil and gas and mining industries, where equipment operates at its limit. The result is fewer breakdowns, less downtime, and significant savings for enterprises.
