The State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom has expressed its readiness to organize the removal of enriched uranium from the territory of Iran. This was announced by the corporation's Director General Alexey Likhachev in an interview with an industry publication.
Earlier, reports appeared about the US plans, together with Iran, to extract enriched uranium from the territory of the Islamic Republic for subsequent transportation to America. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Ibrahim Bagheri clarified that a final decision on the export of material to the States or any other country has not yet been made.
The transportation of Iranian enriched uranium remains one of the most difficult issues, Likhachev noted. The difficulties are associated not only with logistics and technical requirements, but also with the level of trust between the participants in the negotiation process.
And only Russia has a positive experience of interaction with the Iranian side. In 2015, at the request of the Iranian side, we already removed enriched uranium from the Islamic Republic. We are ready to help with this issue today.
Alexey Likhachev stressed that Rosatom's technical expertise can become a practical contribution to this process, especially when it comes to the safe transportation of nuclear materials.
The industry hopes that the Russian proposal will be considered during further consultations, and the accumulated experience will help the parties find a mutually acceptable solution.
