A G1-level geomagnetic storm was recorded on Earth on April 18th — as predicted by scientists from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Despite the minimum level on a five-point scale, auroras may appear in the sky in the coming hours.
According to experts, the unstable geomagnetic situation will persist for 5 to 7 days. The most active phase will last for the first 1–2 days, when short-term increases to the G2 level are possible. More powerful storms are unlikely.
The best time to observe auroras is during the dark hours of the day, especially in the northern and northwestern regions. However, the exact picture will depend on the current activity of the Sun.
This is the second geomagnetic storm in April. The first one occurred from the 2nd to the 4th and reached a level close to G3. Overall, the year remains one of the most intense in terms of geomagnetic disturbances in recent decades.
