The fourth power unit of the Kola Nuclear Power Plant was shut down and put into cold reserve on April 13, 2026. The decision was made based on an agreed application within the framework of the scheduled maintenance plan. Starting April 15, nuclear power plant specialists, together with employees of the Kolatomenergoremont branch, will begin the work.
During the scheduled preventive maintenance, engineers will perform major servicing of the reactor unit with a complete unloading of the core. In parallel, modernization of the oil systems of the main circulation pumps, updating of the turbogenerator shaft sealing system, and fine-tuning of the technological and electrical circuits responsible for the safety of the electrical shop and the thermal automation department are planned.
While the fourth unit is undergoing maintenance, the load of 1170 megawatts is carried by the station's three operating power units. The radiation background in the area of the NPP location remains at the level of 0.06 μSv/h, which corresponds to natural background levels and does not exceed regulatory values.
Repair work is proceeding according to the approved schedule. After the completion of all procedures and commissioning tests, power unit No. 4 will be returned to operation with an updated resource and increased equipment reliability.
