Roscosmos Confirms: ISS to Be Deorbited in 2030

The International Space Station will cease to exist in 2030, according to Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Bakanov. He stated that the gradual shutdown of operations in orbit will begin in 2028, and the station is planned to be safely deorbited two years later. Simultaneously, the Russian Orbital Station, a new domestic complex for scientific research, should become operational by this time.

Bakanov emphasized that the launch of the first ROS module is scheduled for 2028. This will allow synchronizing the completion of work on the ISS with the commissioning of the national platform. Earlier, in December 2025, Russia approved the orbital parameters for the new station: an inclination of 51.6 degrees completely coincides with the trajectory of the ISS, which will simplify launch logistics and technology development.

The head of Roscosmos also clarified that the modules of the International Space Station will not be reused after controlled re-entry into the atmosphere. All structures will burn up or fall into a safe zone in the Pacific Ocean, as stipulated by international protocols.

The Russian Orbital Station is conceived as a completely autonomous object. It is planned to conduct experiments in the fields of materials science, biotechnology, and Earth observation on board. The project should ensure Russia's independent presence in near-Earth orbit after 2030.
