Alexander Georgievich Leonov, who headed the Moscow region NPO Mashinostroyeniya (part of the Tactical Missiles Corporation), passed away at the age of 75. This was reported by RIA Novosti by a source close to the developer.
Leonov was born on February 26, 1952 in Morshansk, Tambov region. In 1975 he graduated from the Moscow Aviation Institute and began working at the Central Design Bureau of Mechanical Engineering (now NPO Mashinostroyeniya), where he rose from design engineer to head of the enterprise, which he headed in 2007.
Under the leadership of Leonov, NPO Mashinostroyeniya developed combat equipment for Avangard intercontinental ballistic missiles, and also created the Zircon hypersonic missile, one of the most modern and fastest anti-ship weapons in the world. In addition, the company produces Oniks cruise missiles, Bastion coastal complexes, supports the operation of UR-100N UTTH ballistic missiles and creates radar surveillance satellites, including Kondor-FKA. In 2019, Alexander Leonov was awarded the title of Hero of Labor.
