5G with a taste of LTE: how operators launch the network without new frequencies

The increase can range from 2% to 26% - the spread depends on the range and region

In Russia, the possibility of an accelerated launch of 5G at the expense of the already used 4G frequencies is being discussed. This approach will allow operators not to wait for the allocation of new ranges, but will lead to a limited speed effect.

According to a study by Vigo, the speed increase can range from 2% to 26%, depending on the range, region, and devices used. Maximum values are possible in wider bands, while in low ranges the acceleration will be minimal.

The idea of technological neutrality — using the same frequencies for different communication standards — is being discussed in the Ministry of Digital Development. This mechanism may be one of the fastest ways to launch 5G in the current conditions.

Opinions in the industry do not completely converge. MegaFon and "T2 Mobile" agree that a speed increase is possible, but note that a tangible effect will appear only when using wide frequency bands. VimpelCom believes that without the allocation of new ranges, it will not be possible to achieve a significant increase.

Additional difficulties are associated with equipment. In Russia, 5G is allowed to be built only on domestic equipment, which is still under development. In addition, the key frequencies used for 5G in the world are not available in the country.

As a result, the launch of 5G may begin in a simplified format — with a moderate increase in speed, but without a full-fledged technological leap. Final decisions on the conditions of implementation and frequency allocation are still under discussion.
