"First in Human History": Likhachev Talks About Rosatom's Unique Project in Uzbekistan

Two large and two small nuclear power units will appear on one site at once

The construction of two large and two small nuclear power units on one site in Uzbekistan will become a "global showcase" of Rosatom's technologies. This was stated by the Director General of the state corporation, Alexey Likhachev.

Of course, this is a global event. The small part, 50-megawatt, is the first export contract in human history for modern small capacity.

Perhaps other countries will take into account Uzbekistan's experience and want to "combine large and small capacity," Likhachev suggested.

About the Rosatom Project

The Agency for Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan and Rosatom signed a contract in 2024 for the construction of a small-capacity nuclear power plant (SMPP). The energy facility will be located in the Jizzakh region of the republic.

In 2025, an additional agreement was concluded for the construction of 2 large power units with VVER-1000 generation 3+ reactors and 2 power units with RITM-200N reactors (with a capacity of 55 MW). In addition, Russia will supply nuclear fuel to Uzbekistan.

The construction of the nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan was entrusted to JSC Atomstroyexport (part of the Engineering Division of Rosatom). Work on creating a construction and installation base for the future nuclear power plant began in the spring of 2025.
