Mining in Buryatia and Transbaikalia will no longer be possible: the Cabinet is introducing a complete ban

The priority is light in homes, not cryptocurrency mining

The Russian government has decided to introduce a year-round ban on cryptocurrency mining in the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory. The corresponding order of the Cabinet of Ministers comes into force on April 1, 2026 and will be valid until March 15, 2031. Thus, the restrictions, which were previously seasonal, become permanent for these two regions.

Until now, only a temporary ban was in effect in the southern parts of Buryatia and Transbaikalia, which applied to the winter periods of peak energy consumption. However, as the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation reported in December, it was decided to switch to a complete restriction of mining activities in these subjects. The department noted that such a step is possible after a corresponding decision by the government commission on the development of electric power, which, in turn, considers requests from the heads of regions.

The decision of the Cabinet is aimed at stabilizing the operation of the power system in the face of increasing load. Previously, the government had already introduced a ban on mining in 13 regions of the country.

For Buryatia, as well as for the neighboring Transbaikalia, the new government decree means tightening the energy consumption regime on an industrial scale. Restrictions that previously applied only during peak winter months (from November 15 to March 15) now apply to the entire calendar year.
