"Russia is not threatened by uranium hunger": Likhachev commented on the rise in energy prices in Europe

Rosatom is implementing a closed nuclear fuel cycle

Russia and its partner countries are provided with uranium for many years to come, and no shortage is expected. This was stated by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, commenting on the rise in energy prices in the EU.

Neither we nor our partners are threatened by uranium hunger. We are provided with our own mineral resource base.
Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom

According to him, Russia retains technological leadership in nuclear energy. Among the advanced projects, Likhachev named the BN-600 and BN-800 fast neutron reactors at the Beloyarsk NPP, as well as the pilot demonstration energy complex (ODEC) with the BREST-OD-300 reactor unit being built in Seversk.

A closed nuclear fuel cycle is already being implemented in the country today. Rosatom uses uranium and plutonium from the processing of spent fuel as raw materials for a quarter of its nuclear power plants. This reduces the need for natural uranium, the head of the state corporation explained.

Rosatom extracts uranium in Russia and abroad. The corporation's assets are located in Transbaikalia, Buryatia and the Kurgan region, as well as in Kazakhstan and Tanzania.
