The T-15MD installation, created at the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", has reached qualitatively new modes of operation in record time. Just two years after receiving the first plasma, the tokamak reached the parameters necessary for a full-fledged thermonuclear reactor, said the president of the institute, Mikhail Kovalchuk.
The main result of 2025 was the obtaining of plasma discharges with a divertor configuration of the magnetic field. The plasma current reached 600 kA, the temperature exceeded 30 million degrees.
The institute explained that the divertor configuration is a plasma confinement mode in which it takes the form necessary for the operation of a thermonuclear reactor. The next step should be the creation of a hybrid reactor based on T-15MD — a thermonuclear neutron source.
