India Bought T-90S and S-400 "Triumph" Air Defense Systems from Russia, but Still Looks to the West

Russia Retains Leadership in Arms Supplies to the Republic

In the period 2021–2025, Russia became the main supplier of weapons to India, but the republic began to turn to Western suppliers more often. This is evidenced by a report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

In terms of the volume of weapons received, India became the second in the world for the specified period, accounting for 8.2% of total global arms imports. The largest share of Indian arms imports came from Russia — 40%.

At the same time, SIPRI analysts clarified that India has increasingly turned to Western suppliers, among which France (29%) and Israel (15%) occupy leading positions.

As a reminder, Russia and India have joint ventures for the production of T-90S tanks, BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, Su-30MKI fighters, aircraft engines, and AK-203 assault rifles, and are building Project 11356 frigates. In addition, India purchases S-400 "Triumph" anti-aircraft missile systems from the Russian Federation.

Indian media reported that the country's authorities are considering the purchase of Su-57 fighters. Aviation expert Roman Gusarov explained to "Perviy Technicheskiy" the benefits of such a deal.

Ivan Grachev, an employee of the Central Economics and Mathematics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, estimated that Russia earned 6 billion dollars on the supply of T-90S tanks to India.
