Collection of DNA from military personnel and law enforcement officers participating in combat operations becomes mandatory in Russia

Putin signed a law on genomic registration of certain categories of citizens

Genomic registration is being introduced in Russia — the collection, storage, and use of DNA data for personal identification. The procedure will become mandatory for certain categories of individuals. The corresponding law was signed by President Vladimir Putin. It has been published on the official legal acts portal.

The document amends Federal Law-61 "On Defense" and provides for genomic registration for military personnel and employees of internal affairs bodies who participate in combat operations, counter-terrorism operations, and peacekeeping missions.

The new regulation affects contract soldiers, mobilized personnel, and volunteers in the combat zone. It also applies to civilian personnel located there.

According to the decree, the government will approve the procedure for genomic registration. In addition, the possibility of destroying DNA data is provided. To do this, after discharge from service, it is necessary to submit a written application to the competent authorities.
