Fraud with repair of anti-aircraft guns for the Navy for 592 million rubles revealed in Russia

Retired Rear Admiral Kovalenko sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for embezzlement

The Moscow Garrison Military Court has ruled in the high-profile case of the embezzlement of 592 million rubles allocated by the Russian Ministry of Defense for state contracts for the repair of spare parts for anti-aircraft missile systems of the Navy.

The military court sentenced retired Rear Admiral Nikolai Kovalenko to 4 years and 6 months in a general regime colony. Due to illness, the court released him from serving his sentence in the form of imprisonment.

Other accomplices in the embezzlement received sentences ranging from 3.5 to 8 years of imprisonment. The convicts were taken into custody, while the Ministry of Defense refused to satisfy the civil claim.

The court found that in 2013–2017, the defendants stole budget funds under four state contracts with the Saratov Radio Instrument Plant, the Elektropribor plant, and the Soyuz-M company. Unsuitable spare parts were supplied under the guise of repaired ones, which were actually purchased in Ukraine in 2012 for 40 million rubles.
