New scam scheme: fraudsters pose as couriers from relatives and ask for a code from SMS

Fraudsters collect personal data from social networks to gain trust and extort codes from "Gosuslugi" and banks

Attackers call or write to victims, posing as relatives who allegedly sent a package. To make the story sound convincing, they collect personal data of loved ones in advance: names, surnames, city of residence, sometimes even photos from social networks. This was reported by the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.

The ultimate goal of fraudsters is to gain access to finances and personal data. They are interested in codes from SMS, login and password from "Gosuslugi", bank card details, passport information, address and phone number. Having seized this information, attackers take out loans in the victim's name, steal money from accounts, hack "Gosuslugi" and use personal data for new scams.

The police reminded of the main safety rules. You should not trust strangers who introduce themselves as couriers and ask for payment or data confirmation. If it is a package from a relative, it is better to interrupt the conversation and call him personally. You can not dictate codes from SMS, and go to "Gosuslugi" - only through the official website.
