First concrete pouring to take place at the Paks-2 NPP: Rosatom launches construction in Hungary

The plant is planned to use VVER-1200 reactors

In Hungary, at the Paks-2 NPP site, the first concrete will be poured into the foundation of power unit 5, being built under Rosatom's project. Rosatom Director General Aleksey Likhachev and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto will take part in the ceremony.

In 2024, production of the reactor vessel for unit 5 was started, and the core catcher (730 tonnes) was delivered via the Black Sea and the Danube. In 2025, manufacturing of the vessel for unit 6 began.

The NPP in Paks, operating on Russian nuclear fuel, produces 45% of all electricity in Hungary and covers 36% of its consumption. The plant operates four power units with VVER-440 reactors, which were built using Soviet technology in the 1980s.

The project has been excluded from EU and US sanctions: the Biden administration tried to obstruct it, but in 2025 Orban reached an agreement with Trump on the absence of obstacles.

Paks-2 NPP is being implemented in Hungary and provides for the construction of the fifth and sixth power units. VVER-1200 reactors will be used for this.
