End of an Era: Zavolzhsky Motor Plant Discontinues Production of 2.3-Liter ZMZ-406 Engine

The engine that powered Gazelles and Volgas for decades has finally left the assembly line

Zavolzhsky Motor Plant (ZMZ) has completed the production of the 2.3-liter ZMZ-406 gasoline engine, which has been used in Volgas, Gazelles, and Sobols for many years. The engine continued to be produced for almost two decades for the secondary market, but now it has been completely removed from the plant's range.

The ZMZ-406 has established itself as a reliable and easy-to-maintain engine. Larger modifications were subsequently developed based on it — the ZMZ-405 with a volume of 2.5 liters and the ZMZ-409 with 2.7 liters, which remain in production today.

Commentators on social networks note that the ZMZ-406 was a real workhorse: even in difficult conditions, when Gazelles were turned into three-ton vehicles or used to transport passengers in buses such as Ruta and PAZ-3205, the engine steadily pulled the load and showed durability.
