"RusHydro" Starts Construction of the Sixth Power Unit at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk CHPP-1

50 MW of gas turbine capacity will help cover peak loads of the island's power system

Sakhalinenergo (part of PJSC "RusHydro") has started construction of the sixth power unit at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk CHPP-1. The facility is scheduled to be commissioned in the first half of 2027, RusHydro reported.

The new power unit will consist of two gas turbine units with a total capacity of 50 MW. After its launch, the installed capacity of the station will reach 498.6 MW. Equipment deliveries to the site began in December 2025, with the gas turbine units manufactured at the "ODK-Aviadvigatel" enterprise.

The main task of the new unit is to cover peak loads of the power system. The introduction of 50 MW of highly maneuverable capacity will improve the efficiency and reliability of power supply to Sakhalin, the company noted. This is especially important for the island's power system, where peak loads often create critical situations.

"RusHydro" is the largest energy company in Russia in terms of installed capacity, uniting more than 600 generation facilities with a total capacity of 38.4 GW. The largest shareholders of the company are the Russian Federation (62.2%), VTB Bank (12.37%) and En+ Group (9.61%).
