Russian government promises to restart former foreign car plants by summer 2026

First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov spoke about the future of such production facilities

All automobile plants in Russia that previously belonged to foreign companies will be restarted by the end of summer 2026, according to First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. Currently, 80% of these enterprises have already resumed their operations. The remaining 20%, including the former Toyota plants in Shushary and Volkswagen in Nizhny Novgorod, will come under the control of Russian and friendly companies.

Manturov added that the new owners will follow the state policy of the Russian Federation on the development and creation of unified platforms, using components of domestic production. Priority will be given to Russian manufacturers of auto components, however, if competencies are lacking, the industry is ready to accept equipment and experience from friendly countries.

According to the First Deputy Prime Minister, by 2030, the Russian automotive industry should reach a market volume of 2.5 million cars. Although there is enough capacity to produce 3 million cars, the government sets a target of 2.5 million units as more realistic.
