The Akkuyu, Turkey's first nuclear power plant project, has received additional funding from Russia. This was announced by the head of the Turkish Ministry of Energy, Alparslan Bayraktar.
Russia has provided new funding of about $9 billion for the Akkuyu project.
These funds are aimed at continuing the construction of the plant and will be used in the coming years.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said that the bulk of the funds will begin to be used in 2026–2027. In 2026, Turkey may receive from 4 to 5 billion dollars of foreign investment under this project.
The first power unit of the plant is expected to start producing electricity in 2026.
The Akkuyu NPP is being built according to a unique "build - own - operate" model and includes 4 power units with VVER generation III+ reactors of Russian design, with a capacity of 1,200 MW each.
