First Russian GACs Assembled in St. Petersburg, But Locals Won't See Them

The entire test batch will be sent to Moscow to assess market demand

Not a single car from the first test batch will appear in St. Petersburg, where the production of Chinese GAC cars began this fall. According to sources in the automotive industry, all 50 cars produced will be sent to Moscow.

The assembly of the first Russian GACs started this fall at the AGR plant in St. Petersburg, located on the site of the former Hyundai plant. However, there are no plans to sell cars on the local market yet. According to dealers, the test batch is intended exclusively for sales in the capital, to assess demand in the country's largest automotive region.

Despite this, the brand's position in the Northern capital remains stable. In the eleven months of 2025, 1035 new GAC cars were registered in St. Petersburg - only 6% less than in the same period last year. For comparison, the total market for new cars in the city fell by 17% over the same period.

The compact GS3 crossover and the flagship GS8 remain the most popular among St. Petersburg residents, accounting for 94% of all brand sales in the region. Experts believe that these models will determine the further development of the brand in Russia, especially after the start of local production.
