How Turnover Fines of up to 25 Million Rubles Will Force Operators to Protect Data

The State Duma Demands Strict Measures for Personal Data Leaks

State Duma Deputy Sergei Mironov stated the need to increase the responsibility of personal data operators for their leakage and introduce turnover fines of at least 25 million rubles.

According to him, personal data leaks directly affect state and public security, so the legislation must correspond to the current situation.

Mironov emphasized that his party will seek a significant tightening of liability measures, since the current measures, in his opinion, are "simply symbolic." He noted that it is sometimes more profitable for operators to pay a fine than to implement additional security measures.

The politician said that in September he sent a corresponding proposal to the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin and recently received a response from the relevant ministry. The general meaning of the response, according to Mironov, is that it is necessary to wait for the results of the application of the current liability measures and assess how they affect the increase or decrease in the number of personal data leaks.
