Roskomnadzor blocked Snapchat messenger with "masks" in Russia

Restrictions were introduced due to the use of the service for criminal activity

Roskomnadzor has been blocking the Snapchat messenger in Russia since October 2025, the agency's press service reported.

According to law enforcement agencies, the service is used to organize terrorist activities in the country, recruit perpetrators, as well as commit fraud and other crimes.

After the ban was introduced, Roskomnadzor explained that the restrictions are aimed at preventing the use of the platform for criminal activities.

The decision to block was made within the framework of the rules for centralized management of the public communication network. Previously, the regulator also restricted FaceTime for similar reasons.

At the same time, FaceTime and the Roblox platform were blocked in Russia in early December. Snapchat itself did not introduce restrictions for Russian users and did not explain the reasons for the failures.

Snapchat was created in 2011 by Stanford University students Evan Spiegel, Frank Brown and Bobby Murphy. The service allows you to exchange photos, videos and messages with automatic content deletion and became popular thanks to filters, "masks" and the "stories" function. As of 2025, the messenger's monthly audience worldwide is 943 million people.
