Unique technology for accurate oil and gas exploration in complex conditions developed by Novosibirsk scientists

New machine learning method speeds up the analysis of geophysical data and helps to work with complex structure fields

Specialists from the Institute of Petroleum Geology and Geophysics SB RAS (Novosibirsk) have developed and patented a technology that allows accurate determination of well sections saturated with oil and gas. The development is already being used to interpret geophysical data not only in Russia, but also abroad — in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Myanmar, the press service of the institute reported.

Modern extraction is increasingly faced with deposits of complex geological structure. Their study requires high accuracy in modeling underground processes. Scientists from IPGG SB RAS proposed an innovative method of data processing based on machine learning algorithms. These algorithms analyze the electrical conductivity of rocks around the well, which allows faster and more accurate determination of promising intervals for drilling.

The main advantage of the new method is speed. According to researchers, the new algorithms allow calculations to be carried out tens of times faster than traditional approaches, without loss of accuracy. This significantly speeds up the process of interpreting geophysical data and reduces the cost of searching for new deposits.
