Two powerful flares recorded on the Sun, magnetic storms expected on Earth on Saturday

Class M flares occurred on the night of October 10

Two powerful class M flares occurred on the Sun on the night of October 10, according to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The first M1.0 level flare was recorded at 3:40 Moscow time, the second — M1.1 at 5:39 Moscow time. Earlier, from midnight to morning, four class C flares, less intense, were observed.

Scientists note that solar activity intensified on October 12, but now there is a decrease in the intensity of flares due to the depletion of free energy reserves in solar centers. Increased activity will last for several more days.

Magnetic storms are expected on Earth as early as Saturday, which may begin within a few hours.

Magnetic storms are caused by streams of charged particles emitted by the Sun. They can affect the operation of power grids, satellites, navigation systems, and shortwave communications. Changes in the geomagnetic field can affect the migration of birds and animals.
