Employees of the Institute of Geology and Mineralogy of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences have obtained unique diamond crystals that have significant potential for quantum-physical research and the development of new technologies. This was announced by the director of the institute, Nikolai Kruk.
In scientific circles around the world, the potential of diamonds in quantum technologies is being actively explored. Their unique properties, such as high resistance to external influences, durability, and data reading accuracy, make them attractive for application. To improve the characteristics of diamonds, various impurities are introduced into their structure, including nitrogen, silicon, germanium, and tin. They create so-called impurity-vacancy centers, which have a high ability to luminescence - the glow of the material.
Experiments are currently underway and the first results have been obtained in creating diamond crystals that can be used as memory modules in new generation computers.
The director of the institute noted that for such purposes, small diamond crystals weighing up to 6 carats are grown. The crystals are characterized by a homogeneous structure and the absence of inclusions, and thanks to the ordered arrangement of defects and controlled introduction of impurities, they have unique properties.
