"Cosmodacha-1": A full-cycle life support system will be tested on the ISS in 2028

Several experimental setups are being created for the project — "Echo", "Svetych", "Cycler", and "Vzor"

At the Baltic State Technical University "Voenmekh" named after D. F. Ustinov in St. Petersburg, work is underway to create a new generation of hybrid life support system that combines physicochemical and biological methods of substance regeneration. The planned space experiment "Cosmodacha-1" is scheduled to take place on the International Space Station in 2028.

Several experimental setups are being created as part of the project: the "Echo" climatron for studying the cycle of substances, the "Svetych" setup for growing plants, the "Cycler" system for processing organic waste, the "Vzor" software package for automating plant care, as well as a mathematical model of the life support system that allows calculating the parameters of life support systems for various mission conditions.

The "Lunar Greenhouse" will allow obtaining oxygen and food through plant photosynthesis, achieving up to 95% closure of the substance cycle. These developments can be useful not only in space, but also in the extreme conditions of the Arctic, Antarctica, and on offshore oil and gas platforms.

The "Cosmodacha-1" project originated in 2021 as a research initiative dedicated to creating closed biotechnical systems to provide humans with everything they need in space. Today, this project has become a full-fledged engineering and scientific platform, where students from the first years are actively involved.

Earlier, www1.ru reported that the new Progress MS-33 cargo spacecraft arrived at Baikonur.
