In the coming years, Russia plans to complete the modernization of three to five nuclear submarines, with at least five more ships in the pipeline. This concerns submarines of projects 971 and 949.
The nuclear submarines of Project 971 were the first to undergo modernization under Project 971M in the late 2010s. The very ones that were once called Akula and Improved Akula in the West: Leopard, Volk, and Samara.
The main change is equipping the submarines with the modern Kalibr missile system, with the ability to use cruise missiles against both sea and land targets. At the same time, modernization of equipment is also planned.
The Russian Navy (VMF) today has several more nuclear cruisers of Project 949A, and they could also undergo modernization and continue to serve for a long time in the Northern and Pacific Fleets of the Russian Navy.
