Magnetic storms are coming: an M2.2 class flare occurred on the Sun

Scientists note high activity in the same area

The Institute of Applied Geophysics (FSBI "IPG") reported a solar flare of medium power, recorded on August 7 at 05:32 Moscow time. Such events increase the likelihood of increased magnetic storms on Earth in the coming days.

According to the institution, an M2.2 class flare with a duration of 25 minutes was recorded in the X-ray range in the active group of sunspots No. 4168 (coordinates N04W29).

Since the beginning of August, this is the seventh event of this level, with most of the flares occurring within the same active region on the solar surface.

Solar flares are classified according to the power of X-ray radiation into five classes: A, B, C, M and X. Each subsequent class is ten times more powerful than the previous one. Class M belongs to the penultimate category on the intensity scale and may be accompanied by coronal mass ejections that can cause geomagnetic storms on Earth.
