Rosatom has begun regular deliveries of a radiopharmaceutical based on the radioisotope samarium-153 to the Northwestern Federal District. The drug has become available to patients in St. Petersburg, at the Russian Scientific Center of Radiology and Surgical Technologies named after Academician A.M. Granov.
Previously, the radiopharmaceutical was used only in other regions of the country, and patients from the Northwest had to travel for treatment. Now, the region's need for high-tech nuclear medicine is being met locally.
The drug is used to treat oncological diseases. It is produced by the L.Ya. Karpov Scientific Research Institute of Physical Chemistry. The samarium-153 isotope is irradiated, among other places, in the reactors of the Leningrad NPP. Extending the service life of the reactors until 2030 will allow increasing production volumes.
