A tsunami hit the coastal zone of Severo-Kurilsk, said the governor of the Sakhalin region, Valery Limarenko.
According to him, residents of the settlement are in safety on a hill until the threat of repeated waves is completely canceled. Earlier on Wednesday, tremors with a magnitude of 7.9 were recorded in the city. Evacuation was announced in the settlement itself.
Three tsunami waves hit the coastal zone of Severo-Kurilsk, the last of which was the most powerful and tore ships from their moorings.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 87 occurred off the coast of Kamchatka. The governor of the region, Vladimir Solodov, called this earthquake the strongest in decades.
The Office for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring recorded a tsunami wave up to four meters high in Kamchatka. A wall collapsed in one of the kindergartens on the peninsula. At the time of the incident, there was no one there, no injuries were reported.
