Scientists from the Federal Research Center for Integrated Arctic Studies named after Academician N. P. Laverov have demonstrated that passive seismic methods can be effectively used to analyze the geological environment in the Arctic.

The methods are suitable for both scientific and practical research, which may be useful for industrial enterprises in the Russian Arctic and the Far East.

According to Galina Antonovskaya, Head of the Seismology Laboratory, passive methods allow for rapid analysis of the geological environment even in difficult conditions, such as permafrost. The methods were tested at a site for the construction of a mining and processing plant in the Trans-Baikal Territory.

In 2022, scientists installed a seismic station on Novaya Zemlya, choosing a location taking into account geological features. The station was installed near the "Malye Karmakuly" aerological station. Passive methods, unlike active ones, do not require artificial wave excitation, which makes them faster and more economical. Scientists used the microseismic sounding method and other approaches to analyze microseismic activity.

In Transbaikalia, scientists assessed the construction site and recommended an alternative location due to the complex tectonic structure and high seismicity of the region. The research results are published in the international scientific journal "Research in Geophysics."
