«Electro-L» and «Arktika-M» captured the Ziros cyclone over Moscow with kilometer accuracy

Satellites in geostationary and highly elliptical orbits transmit multispectral images

Roscosmos published images from the Electro-L and Arktika-M satellites of the Ziros cyclone, which brought precipitation and cold weather to Moscow, on its Telegram channel.

The cyclone is currently passing over the capital and causing a slight decrease in temperature and precipitation in the central part of Russia.

The state corporation notes in its message that the satellites continue to monitor the situation, watching the development of the cyclone from space.

«Электро-L» is a series of hydrometeorological satellites operating in geostationary orbit. They are equipped with a multi-zone scanning device for hydrometeorological support (MSU-GS), which allows to obtain multispectral images of clouds and the Earth's surface in the visible and infrared ranges. The resolution of the images is 1 km in the visible and 4 km in the infrared ranges. The images are updated every 30 minutes, which ensures the rapid acquisition of data on weather conditions. Electro-L satellites play an important role in climate monitoring, weather forecasting and tracking emergencies.

«Арктика-М» is a series of satellites operating in a highly elliptical orbit of the Molniya type. This orbit allows satellites to stay over the northern regions of the Earth for a long time, providing continuous observation of the Arctic and adjacent territories. «Арктика-М» are equipped with similar equipment as «Электро-L», including MSU-GS, but with additional capabilities for monitoring specific climatic and environmental conditions in the Arctic region. They play a key role in tracking ice conditions, snow cover conditions and other important climatic parameters.

Both satellites provide valuable information for various departments, including Roshydromet, the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Defense, as well as for scientific research and the development of climate models. The images obtained from these satellites are available on specialized platforms and are used for the analysis and forecasting of weather conditions.
